Hello, Year 4! We hope you’ve all had a fabulous week and are ready to do a bit more learning.
As you are aware, some of you will be coming back into school for a few days whilst some will be continuing with your learning at home. If you are continuing with home learning, we want to reassure you that we are still thinking about you and are here to help where necessary. If you would like to email any work to the homework address or post work on Twitter or the school Facebook page, that would be fabulous. Do remember that you can do as much or as little as you wish. Equally, if you have any worries or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch; the Year 4 class teachers will also be making contact with families in the coming week.
The weekly blogs will now include all literacy, topic and numeracy lessons that will be taught in school, from Monday-Wednesday, with further activities planned for Thursday and Friday. This approach will ensure that all Year 4 pupils are able to access the same learning. We will also provide additional activities and web links to dip into too.
Aim to read for at least 20 minutes each day.

Day 5 – Today is a punctuation exercise, focusing on the correct use of the possessive apostrophe with plural nouns. Please complete the attached sheet then have a go at writing some of your own examples.
Alternatively, have a go at some of the following activities:
- Write a diary extract to explain what you have been up to.
- Write a letter to your teacher – and they may even write one back!
- Continue with the poetry activities from last week.

Day 4 and 5- Column addition with more carrying. Complete the work sheet below. You could carry this on through two days as it is more challenging! There are also 3 problems attached for you to complete over Thursday and Friday. You can choose when you want to complete them!

The number of the week is 1889!
This number relates to Mr Nettleship and his beloved football club, Sheffield United. Can you think how it would be related?
- How could you show this number as a decimal?
- What happens if you multiply and divide this number by 10, 100 and 1000?
- What is the biggest number you can make?
- What would the number look like if you partitioned it?
Topic – these are the tasks that will be covered at school this week.
- This half term we are going to be learning about the Americas and Rainforests. We are starting by looking at South America – please use an atlas to label the map of South America, including the capital cities of countries, then shade in the areas where rainforests can be located.
- Research information about rainforests – can you produce a fact-file or create a mindmap to display your findings? Look at this one to give you some ideas. The weblinks will help you to ‘fact find’.
- Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at the work of Henri Rousseau.

- Have a look at his famous painting, ‘tiger in a tropical storm’.
- Task – now select your own piece from the picture and try and sketch the shapes of the leaves or plants. Look at the examples on the sheet to help you. If possible, use different types of pencils to show line, tone and texture.
Over the next few weeks, we are going to focus on materials, we will provide a practical task and a written / online task. You can choose which tasks you would like to complete.
Mr Nettleship is planning on building his own boat. However, he is struggling on what materials to use. He would like your help! Using a range of materials in your house, could you design and build your own prototype boat?
The boat must be able to:
- Float with items in the boat.
- Withstand wind – for this you could blow your boat across some water.
- You must also include 3 different materials. e.g wool, plastic, card.
- Finally, write an evaluation about your findings! GOOD LUCK!
