Humanities, Art and DT

Humanities

Geography and History are primarily taught through an enquiry based approach. Each half term, the year groups cover a new topic; this is delivered to the children through a key question to promote curiosity and a clear focus for the children’s learning.

Examples of the key questions include:

  • What is a hero and who is worth remembering?
  • Can disasters have a positive impact?
  • How have science and technology changed the world we live in?

Within the topic sessions, children use their skills of being a historian or a geographer to gather evidence which will support them in answering the question set.

The children’s answers and their application of the concepts we have studied will help us to assess their ability as a historian or geographer.

The key concepts are covered across each year group and these are also progressive throughout the school.

Art, Design and Design Technology

Within each year group, and as they move up the school, the children experience drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, textiles, collage and exploring and developing ideas. The teaching of these skills is embedded in high-quality purposeful learning linked with the topics being covered.

Whole school projects take place focusing on drawing, sculpture and painting to explore the progression of art at Archibald. We also deliver the ‘Take One Picture’ project.

Throughout their time at Archibald, the children learn about artists of the North East, Britain and the world including artists of both genders, those accomplished in the different disciplines of art as well as the styles of art.

Not only do we teach the children to apply the skills but we teach the children to appraise artwork, draw comparisons and verbalise their opinions.

Each year group has one topic based on the arts:

  • Sunflowers and Water Lillies
  • Rio de Vida
  • Scrumdidillyumptious
  • The Greatest Show

In terms of the Design Technology, this is to be taught over a succession of lessons to ensure the teaching of key skills before they are applied to a project.

Core projects relate to:

  • Structures
  • Mechanisms
  • Food
